Monday Morning Reflections from The Inspired Nana

When we think about the things we hope to give our children, good health must surely be among the most precious.

Yet health is not something we can wrap up and hand to them. It grows quietly from the little choices we make each day—the food we put on the table, the way we move our bodies, the sleep we make time for, and perhaps most importantly, the example we set.

Children are wonderful observers. They notice whether we reach for a piece of fruit or something filled with sugar. They see us taking a walk, working in the garden, swimming, stretching, or simply getting outside and moving. Long before they understand words like nutrition and exercise, they are learning from us what it means to care for a body.

Food Is More Than Fuel

One of the loveliest things we can teach children is the connection between what they eat and how they feel.

Rather than making certain foods seem “good” and others “bad,” we can help them become curious. Which breakfast helps you feel ready for school? Which snack gives you energy to play? How does your tummy feel after different foods?

More families are also paying attention to ingredient labels and choosing foods with fewer artificial colors and flavors and less added sugar. Children can be part of this learning. A trip to the grocery store can become a little lesson in looking at labels, recognizing ingredients, choosing colorful fruits and vegetables, and understanding where food comes from.

And children are often much more enthusiastic about eating something when they have helped prepare it!

Even young children can wash fruit, spread something on bread, fill a water bottle, or choose vegetables for a lunchbox. As they grow, they can learn to prepare their own school lunches and select nourishing snacks to take along.

These aren’t just kitchen skills. They are life skills.

Movement Belongs in Every Day

Exercise doesn’t have to mean an organized sport or a complicated fitness routine.

It can be a family walk after dinner. Dancing around the kitchen. Riding a bicycle. Swimming. Playing ball in the yard. Walking the dog. Gardening. Stretching together in the morning.

Children naturally love to move when movement still feels like play.

And perhaps that’s something we adults can learn from them, too.

A healthy daily routine makes room for activity, but also for rest. Bodies need movement, good food, fresh air and sleep. Minds need quiet moments, imagination, conversation and laughter.

Health is about balance.

Parents Lead the Way

We can tell children a hundred times that something is important, but there is something much more powerful:

Letting them see us do it.

When children see the adults they love taking care of themselves—not out of fear or obsession, but because life feels better when we feel well—they begin to understand that caring for one’s health is an act of respect for oneself.

We don’t need perfection.

There will be birthday cake. There will be rainy afternoons on the sofa. There will be hurried mornings when lunch isn’t quite as thoughtfully prepared as we hoped.

That’s life.

What matters is the pattern we return to: wholesome food, movement, rest, fresh air, laughter, and an awareness of how our choices make us feel.

Because ultimately, we aren’t trying to raise children who worry constantly about being healthy.

We are helping raise children who know how to care for themselves.

And when a child feels strong, rested, nourished and well, something beautiful happens.

There is more energy for learning.

More energy for playing.

More room for imagination.

More willingness to explore.

And perhaps most importantly, more opportunity for that wonderful, spontaneous joyous expression of life that belongs so naturally to childhood.
