Labor Day weekend has a way of making us pause.

For many families, it marks the unofficial end of summer. School is back in session or just getting started, vacations are winding down, and the relaxed rhythm of summer begins to give way to schedules, homework, work commitments, practices, appointments, and all the activities that fill our calendars.

But Labor Day is also a day to recognize the contributions of working people. And when I think about work, I can’t help but think about all the work that goes into family life.

Some of the most important work we do never comes with a paycheck.

It’s getting children ready for school in the morning. It’s packing lunches, making dinners, washing endless loads of laundry, helping with homework, driving to activities, keeping track of appointments, and making sure everyone has what they need.

It’s going to work every day so there is a home to come back to.

It’s staying up late with a child who isn’t feeling well.

It’s teaching a teenager how to drive, helping a little one learn to tie their shoes, or patiently answering the same question for the tenth time.

It’s comforting, encouraging, listening, teaching, cleaning, cooking, planning, worrying, laughing, and starting all over again the next morning.

And then there are the grandparents.

Our work may look a little different, but we have our own important role to play. We may not be packing school lunches every morning anymore, but we can listen to the stories, share our experiences, offer encouragement, provide an extra pair of hands, and sometimes simply be there.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children and grandchildren is our time.

Labor Day weekend gives us one more opportunity to slow down before the busy season begins again.

Maybe there will be a family cookout. Maybe you’ll spend the afternoon at the park or the pool. Maybe there will be a backyard game, a walk around the neighborhood, or a simple meal around the kitchen table.

It doesn’t have to be elaborate.

Children don’t necessarily remember the expensive vacation or the perfect celebration. Very often, what stays with them are the little things: sitting beside Mom or Dad, laughing with a brother or sister, making something together, hearing a grandparent tell a story, staying up a little later than usual, or simply knowing that the people they love were happy to spend time with them.

Those moments are important.

As summer comes to a close, I find myself thinking about how quickly childhood moves forward. Every year brings new milestones. A little one starts school. A child learns to ride a bike. A teenager gets a first job or learns to drive. Before we know it, the children who once needed us for everything are making plans of their own.

That’s why the ordinary moments matter so much.

Labor Day reminds us to appreciate work, but perhaps it can also remind us to appreciate the people behind the work.

The parents who are doing their best.

The grandparents who still want to help.

The children who are growing and learning every day.

And all the family members who contribute in ways that may never be noticed or thanked.

So this Labor Day weekend, if you have the opportunity, take a little time to put down the to-do list.

Sit together.

Share a meal.

Go outside.

Play a game.

Take a walk.

Listen to the children.

Laugh at something silly.

Take the picture.

Make the memory.

Summer may be coming to an end, but family time doesn’t have to.
