There is something magical about birthdays.
No matter where we come from, birthdays remind us that another year has passed, another chapter has been written, and another opportunity has arrived to gather with the people we love.
Here in America, birthdays are an important part of family life. Our familiar “Happy Birthday” song is recognized around the world, and each year we joyfully sing those simple words to celebrate someone special.
For children, birthdays are filled with excitement and wonder.
Parents have become wonderfully creative in planning celebrations. Some families enjoy a quiet gathering at home with a favorite meal, balloons, and a cupcake. Others choose adventures like skating rinks, parks, bowling alleys, or other special places where children can laugh, play, and make memories with friends.
The decorations, games, and gifts are always exciting, but what children remember most is the feeling of being surrounded by people who love them.
This weekend, our own family gathered for a birthday that was truly extraordinary.
My mother-in-law celebrated her 101st birthday.
As I looked around the room, I saw something much greater than a birthday party. Sons and daughters stood beside nieces and nephews. Great-grandchildren played alongside cousins, while several generations shared stories, laughter, hugs, photographs, and memories.
For a little while, everyday life paused.
Young children played happily, adults reminisced about years gone by, and our family reflected on the remarkable journey of a woman whose life has touched so many others. Looking across the room, I couldn’t help but think that the greatest gift she has given us isn’t measured in years alone—it’s the family she helped create and the love that continues to grow through each new generation.
Birthdays remind us that life moves forward, but they also remind us to look back with gratitude.
As grandparents, we understand how quickly childhood passes. One birthday follows another until suddenly the little child who once blew out candles is celebrating birthdays with children of their own.
Perhaps that’s why birthdays become even more meaningful as the years go by.
They give us a reason to gather.
To tell old stories.
To make new memories.
To celebrate not only another year of life, but the relationships that make life so rich.
